Menswear/Knitted jumpsuit and coat

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

The aim of the work was to expand on the old associations with femininity and wealth without restraining women’s emancipation. To fulfill the aim a comprehensive research on the luxury crafts, art and perceptions of sexuality was undertaken when visiting Victoria and Albert museum, researching literature and Internet about fine artists, fashion design icons. A lot of experimentation with textures and material was required as the work is largely based on the feeling of rich and vast (rich colour, patterns, shapes). The goal was to develop fresh and contemporary collection. In order to avoid unconscious copying and mimicking of the existing fashion designs, inspirations for the project where found in the rich craft and art history.

"Open-Minded" collection, Womenswear designer Yui Tai originally from Hong Kong just graduated at London College of Fashion. She drew inspiration from artist Leigh Bowery to compare with the fashion world and discover the human body distortion to finding her own aesthetic of beauty. Amazed by the surreal body structure, exaggerate volume and unique proportion, the designers first start to play with original human body shape and using layers of wadding combine with leather to expand her own surreal silhouette from this collection. more work coming soon. designer - Yui Tai photographer - Sharon Salad Lee photo editor :Sharon Salad Lee hair and make up artist: Jihye Sim model: Sammie.G contact me by email: kayuitai@gmail.com http://kayuitai.com/

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

I am a third year student at London College of Fashion studying BA (Hons) FDT: Surface Textiles and I specialise in Knitwear. I am interested in combining unusual materials and pushing techniques to their extremes to create innovative experimental textiles. I like exploring new ways of constructing garments to create new ways they can be worn. I often take inspiration from the traditional garments of different cultures, especially that of eastern Asian. The aesthetic of my work takes a lot of influence from Japanese fashion as well as sportswear and street fashion. My work takes a lot of inspiration from the process and the techniques used to create the textiles. Exploring textile techniques is an important part of the research in my work and I enjoy working in 3D. I use this approach when designing garments and stand work is integral to the development of silhouettes in my work. I always aim to let the textiles inform the silhouette as I the unpredictable nature of working this way can create great results.

Editorial - Skeletal Snake Neck Piece

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Embracing new technologies and merging them with old crafts; I create pieces fusing knit, embroidery, laser cutting and textile manipulation and have a strong understanding of proportion and the body with the ability to engineer and construct embellishment to enhance design on the body. All pieces designed and constructed are inspired by architecture and structure in nature. Exoskeletons and skeletons in particular have constantly been a point of fascination and through layering, contrasting and distorting my inspirations I push the development further via context, use of materials and scale. The focus is always on the textile first, the final design being a result of the 3D textile experimentation process. The 3D textiles are also developed digitally layering with illustration creating another unique way of interpreting and merging developments.
