BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear
Born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa and now a Londoner, Brett de Jager spent his formative years and early adult life surrounded by the vibrancy and wild nature of all that is African. As an accomplished dancer Brett travelled the world and worked in countries both ends of the globe including Korea and the USA. But he has always viewed Africa as his home, a sentiment reignited by an extended visit to his home country, South Africa, during the 2010 World Cup. It was during this visit that he truly reclaimed his heritage, submerging himself fully into the arts, music and culture of South Africa, discovering a greater appreciation, pride and admiration for local art, music, décor and the great melting pot of cultures the country offers. This collection, âPunx on Safariâ, explores and combines the ethos of the 70s punk with that of an African tribal warrior. The juxtaposition of these two cultures not only highlights the obvious differences between them, it marks its own niche by drawing out the similarities. Self-expression, defiance, free spirit, individuality, robust, chaotic, untamed, intense personal creativity imparting a rawness and freshness creating a strong identity may be words befitting the anarchic and deliberately confrontational punk, but they can also aptly describe an African warrior. The greatest African influence is the vibrant colour palette, contrasting textures and draping. The designer then translated these traditional influences into a more contemporary collection, combining the spirit and attitude of the punk to, then be sent on an expedition into the cradle of humankind. This collection marries Brettâs history and present. It illustrates how cultures, ancient and modern, and spread thousands of miles apart can come together in celebrating elements of what it is to be human, of what it is to be wild, independent and free.
