BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles
I am a Japanese designer with an international background who loves aesthetics with a hint of fantasy in reality. This Autumn/Winter 2013-14 collection was produced within a collaborative team: two students from Surface Textiles, myself in knitwear and Ping-Yi Lee in embellishment, dedicated to Janet Kim from Menswear. The concept of childhood imagination was studied through areas such as psychology, sociology, and visual expressions to understand the significance of children's creativity from carious perspectives. These themes were then interpreted through knit, embellishment, and shape development to create garments that embodies playful and sophisticated innovation. Like the monsters drawn by children, the mood of the project reflects on their contradictory characterisation as intimidating but beautiful, expressive but hidden, juvenile but mature... Discovering these imaginary creatures that are thought to be watching us from the dark closet of underneath the bed took us on a journey to explore the colours, movement, and textures for the collection.
