BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles
My work has been heavily influenced through the fascination of social media. Social media is an interactive platform designed to connect people through the forms of online technology. Its influence on todayâs society is so vast that it has become a necessity for online presence and a voice to be heard. Its relevance to fashion is paramount to the fast pace industry which relies on updating itself overnight. What is interesting about this concept are the groups of people who are not aware of social media. Tribal cultures, those devoted to faith, and certainly the older generation have managed to sustain a comfortable lifestyle without the urge of updating their newsfeed. My aim throughout design is to show this idea through experimentation of textile materials and knitting techniques. 'Fashion Clothes are adapting to fit iPads. Designer Lucy Borland has made a coat with iPad-sized pockets because, she says, âpeople cannot be without their tablets and have to feel close to the internet at all timesâ. Her coat is even designed to look similar to an iPad, with metallic Lurex.' (Susannah Butter, Evening Standard, April 2013)
