BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles
Copyright © 2013 Victoria Rowley Victoria Rowley is a Textile Print Designer and Illustrator currently based in London. She enjoys experimenting with techniques in silkscreen printing, and using her skills in hand illustration into digital print. Victoriaâs art requires an open mind as she interjects traditional academic botanicals with exotic imagery. 8=========D In Hyper-Real SS13, Victoria set out to explore themes of fleshy surfaces and sexuality. She uses abstract interpretations to replicate the real sensuality and lustre of correlated textures. Influenced by the photography of Pierre et Gilles, and German Expressionist cinema, Victoria uses harsh contrasts of colour; over-saturated and suffused in her graphic compositions and carnal imagery. She introduces pearlescent lemon and lavender colours in her more exaggerated and uncanny motifs of enlarged and distorted images of glitter and wax. This is set off with rich harmonious earth shades to make the smooth textures advance, and to appear radiate in a hypnotic quality. Having introduced such frivolity through a very stylistic approach to print development, Victoria wanted further exploration to circulate around a discussion on taste. As a reaction against notions of good taste, bad taste is fully explored through archetypical motifs of the grotesque and the beautiful, with writer, Umberto Eco being of key influence. Ecoâs dry take on objects of American âHyper-Realâ, (almost perfectly fake ornamental replicas of icons in European arts/culture), inspired her to place hand illustrations of âcrude imageryâ alongside more traditional academic art. Florid pencil drawings of botanics and genitalia with leafy foliage have evolved into monstrous print placements.
