LASERCUT HANDPAINTED LEATHER

BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles

*- IN PRODUCTION - IMAGES OF COLLECTION COMING SOON - * THE START OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER The concept behind this collection is taken from Reptilian Theory. I have constructed a narrative from the conspiracy in which the UNDERCLASS assassinate those in power as they believe them to be REPTILIAN OVERLORDS that are controlling humanity. "It is believed that Margaret Thatchers recent death was an assassination by an underground resistance group of humans THE PLAN IS THE TAKE BACK CONTROL OF PLANET EARTH BY EXTERMINATING THE REPTILIAN RACE." This collection plays with culturally relevant topics such as Political Injustice, Class and Revolt with a backdrop of conspiracy and paranoia which is widespread in todays Cultural Climate. 'THE START OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER' seeks to communicate a political message through dark humour and metaphor. The aesthetic is rooted in countercultural and the DIY movement. This reflects the technophobic paranoia of conspiracy theorists by keeping everything 'offline' and 'underground'. All Textiles are hand painted and garments are constructed by hand using tradition Leather craft techniques. Through my research I discovered the source of empowerment that Horror Movies and Conspiracy Theories bring to the human conscious. With this in mind, the textiles seek to create the skin of the reptilian race, whilst the garments with raw edges and wrapped silhouettes show these creatures being skinned and worn as a source of empowerment and fearlessness in an increasingly scary world. BIO Textiles Focused Fashion Designer (Print Specialism) Through my BA I have developed an innovative and experimental way of working. Though I specialised in the Print Pathway, I believe my work to be Multimedia and my design process works within many disciplines such as Embroidery, Embellishment, Knit, Leathercraft, CAD CAM Technology and Fashion Design, as well as having an extensive knowledge of Printed Textiles. auralydon@gmail.com Instagram @aurasato

Jumper detail: textile collaboration with Brogan Toyn, for

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Zoe is a London based textile designer, specialising in embroidered textiles for both Menswear and Womenswear. She flourishes in a creative environment and is constantly engaging in opportunities to expand and enhance an innate artistic flair. A strong attraction to decoration and an acute awareness of colour and aesthetics, stem from Zoe's intrinsic desire to enhance and develop a fun, uplifting and energetic embroidery style, drawing on aspects of global cultures both old and new. In particular, Zoe is extremely passionate about colour, constantly seeking inspiration to manipulate and embellish a wide range of vibrant and exuberant textile materials. Zoe's FMP collection, is inspired by 60s nostalgia and children's artwork, targeting the older customer. It aims to regenerate fabric surfaces that are beautiful and alluring, through her love of colour and abstract illustration style. As an individual,Zoe loves working with other designers, in order that her textiles can meet a wider audience: womenswear student Man Yim and Zoe, have recently collaborated for their FMP photoshoot. In addition, within her graduate collection Zoe has collaborated with Menswear student Brogan Toyn for ‘Jamaican me Crazy’. The collection, an eccentric yet sensational , SS2013 sportswear range, has been selected for the LCF Press Show. The textiles for ‘Jamaican me Crazy’ further reflect Zoe’s ability to cater for a wide customer base and showcase her unconventional style towards textile design. Reversing the constraints on gender, ‘Jamaican me Crazy’ is a rebellion against frequently used homophobic dancehall lyrics, inspired by the controversial musical style and promiscuity of Jamaica's Dancehall Queens. The textiles are tactile and enticing, with soft rainbow furs creeping along the edges of garments. In turn, tight crotches are emphasized by brilliantly printed and metallic lurex fabrics, with surges of complex mark making forming these prints. Bedazzling, sequined crop tops emphasize an outlandish street style, contradicting urban aesthetics. In addition, references to dancehall contemporaries in the hip hop genre, are portrayed through basketball shorts engulfed in colour and the sparkle of iridescent fabrics. Zoe’s sensitivity towards colour is portrayed here, through applying heat pressed patterns and disperse dyes to fabrics. This enables the juxtapositions of colour to be an important focus within the collection. Red or black are often familiarised with promiscuity, however, avoiding seedy connotations ‘Jamaican me Crazy’ adopts modest, pastel hues. These effectively distract from potentially erotic undertones, and encourage the energy of the dancehall for both onlooker and wearer. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

I graduated London College of Fashion with a First Class Honours Degree in FDT: Surface Textiles specialising in knitwear . I am interested in combining unusual materials and pushing techniques to their extremes to create innovative experimental textiles. I like exploring new ways of constructing garments to create new ways they can be worn. I often take inspiration from the traditional garments of different cultures, especially that of eastern Asian. The aesthetic of my work takes a lot of influence from Japanese fashion as well as sportswear and street fashion. My work takes a lot of inspiration from the process and the techniques used to create the textiles. Exploring textile techniques is an important part of the research in my work and I enjoy working in 3D. I use this approach when designing garments and stand work is integral to the development of silhouettes in my work. I always aim to let the textiles inform the silhouette as I like the unpredictable nature of working this way can create great results.

LCF Press shoot: Mortal Fascination: Oversized Jumper

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

The Spring/Summer 2014 season sees the launch of textile designer, Natasha Searls-Punter. Born and educated on the boarders of London and Surrey, she takes an experimental slant on Traditional embroidery techniques to produce innovative textile outcomes. Working with the intension to take the ugly and make it beautiful, she approaches large and difficult subjects such as injury and disease as inspiration for her designs. Being inspired by the natural forms, for the natural form allows the fabrics created to interact with the wearer on multiple levels. This resulted in the success of Natasha’s graduate collection which explores the damage to the victims of hunting though the lens of World War 1. Inspired by the work of the pioneering surgeon Dr Gillies, facial injuries and reconstructive surgical procedures provide distressing yet fascinating imagery which translates into delicate ink work, resulting in a high end ready to wear womenswear collection. Fusing refined beading techniques with raw and torn embellishments, this collection has elegant feel whilst demonstrating the gravitas of the subject. Combining traditional techniques such as Cornley Moss stitching and Tambour bead work with unusual materials such as latex gives the collection a fresh feel. The fascination with destruction of natural forms continues with Tudors vs. 70’s Glam rock: 'Pox me up' which sees the exploration of skin disease as a desirable attribute, inspired by the Tudors and 70’s Glam Rock. Looking to the 70’s as inspiration for the colour palette, like that of a glammed up bruise. The Tudors provides the majority of the visual inspiration, studying small pox, skin ulcers and wounds in particular. Natasha expresses this through surface manipulation in combination with metalwork and traditional embroidery stitching. Again looking to a delicate subject matter, ‘Mortal Fascination’ explores aspects of early 20th century western culture that centers on death, namely trophy hunting and Victorian mourning traditions. Illustration features very heavily in this collection where Natasha has been able to develop her ‘grown out’ technique with the animal heads which dominate the embroidery. By translating these illustrations from flat drawings to stitch and fabric manipulation, she creates unusual juxtapositions of texture and shade. Using white as the canvas to demonstrate these textures the contrast between the delicate, damaged nature of the embroidery and the casual, sporty feel of the garments. Working in collaboration with womenswear designer, Roxanne Leger, these two create a well defined, accessible, high end, womenswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2014 to be shown as part of LCF’s Press Show 2013. This collaboration follows the successful execution of the Flora and Fauna project, as seen in the LCF Annual 2013.
