BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

London based Fashion Designer and Illustrator WINTER DRESSES there is nothing more glamorous than wearing a dress in a snowy winters night. My very first vision and starting point of my final BA collection. This collection is a modern interpretation of imagery from pagan rituals still celebrated in villages in middle Europe and art and the occult. Referencing artist like Victor Hugo, Max Ernst as well as Paul Klee conjure up my fascination for occult and art. The mood of Fernand Khnopff painting gave me a platform for the aura I wished to create influenced with my personal aesthetics and design codes. Expressive oversized silhouettes, attention to finishing details and the use of crafts (knit) as well as the chosen materials and the sensitivity of colors are standards of my work. The ghostly silhouettes of my dresses as well as its transparent material are inspired by imagery from occult shapes and symbolism and costumes from pagan rituals. My collection is also featuring a few hand-knitted pieces with different size metal beads knitted into a silk- wool mix. These pieces go with chiffon dresses. All my colors are pale, transparent like a dreamy version of reality balanced with some dark nearly black tones. Within this project i looked through the past to uncover the brutal history of the slave trade and how specifically the female slaves were treated, the lives they lead and the task they had to deal with on a daily basis. Raising consciousness throughout a material culture on the physical and mental state that female slaves were left in is the overall perspective for the theme. Using natural yarns Hemp, Cotton, Wool and linen also neutral colours to go with the palette of the research. I am a strong minded character who likes to use an assortment of colours and shapes when creating knit.

FdA Fashion Design And Marketing

Before ending up in garment design for high end market and luxury sport segment in particular, I did it the other way round – had a marketing and advertising degree, made a name in event management and brand-building, artist collaborations and PR. Keeping a critical eye on trends and capitalising on them was part of the job. True passion never goes away though; to me, fashion is the way I present myself, the way I see the world, it's vocation and work and play. Thankfully tables have turned. Today I can immerse in every chunk of fashion from fiddling with fabrics, colours, constructing garments and image, to predicting tends to brand-building to promotional concept. Fashion is the part of my personality I had a privilege to finally put together. My final collection is mixture between high end design and sportswear. I wanted to provide women comfortable clothes yet glamour. The design aims to be cutting edge, funny and provocative which reflect into the name of the collection: "Bankrupt" and the used fabrics. I picked up on the functional aspects of LYCRA and pushed these further to incorporate waterproof pockets for phones and MP3 players that take the garments beyond just fashion, giving them depth that I feel sportswear can lack. . The overall look is softened by the organza, which creates sheen and relaxed feel that any woman can feel confidently attractive wearing. Brett de Jager SS12 'Punx on Safari'

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear

Born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa and now a Londoner, Brett de Jager spent his formative years and early adult life surrounded by the vibrancy and wild nature of all that is African. As an accomplished dancer Brett travelled the world and worked in countries both ends of the globe including Korea and the USA. But he has always viewed Africa as his home, a sentiment reignited by an extended visit to his home country, South Africa, during the 2010 World Cup. It was during this visit that he truly reclaimed his heritage, submerging himself fully into the arts, music and culture of South Africa, discovering a greater appreciation, pride and admiration for local art, music, décor and the great melting pot of cultures the country offers. This collection, ‘Punx on Safari’, explores and combines the ethos of the 70s punk with that of an African tribal warrior. The juxtaposition of these two cultures not only highlights the obvious differences between them, it marks its own niche by drawing out the similarities. Self-expression, defiance, free spirit, individuality, robust, chaotic, untamed, intense personal creativity imparting a rawness and freshness creating a strong identity may be words befitting the anarchic and deliberately confrontational punk, but they can also aptly describe an African warrior. The greatest African influence is the vibrant colour palette, contrasting textures and draping. The designer then translated these traditional influences into a more contemporary collection, combining the spirit and attitude of the punk to, then be sent on an expedition into the cradle of humankind. This collection marries Brett’s history and present. It illustrates how cultures, ancient and modern, and spread thousands of miles apart can come together in celebrating elements of what it is to be human, of what it is to be wild, independent and free. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

I graduated London College of Fashion with a First Class Honours Degree in FDT: Surface Textiles specialising in knitwear . I am interested in combining unusual materials and pushing techniques to their extremes to create innovative experimental textiles. I like exploring new ways of constructing garments to create new ways they can be worn. I often take inspiration from the traditional garments of different cultures, especially that of eastern Asian. The aesthetic of my work takes a lot of influence from Japanese fashion as well as sportswear and street fashion. My work takes a lot of inspiration from the process and the techniques used to create the textiles. Exploring textile techniques is an important part of the research in my work and I enjoy working in 3D. I use this approach when designing garments and stand work is integral to the development of silhouettes in my work. I always aim to let the textiles inform the silhouette as I like the unpredictable nature of working this way can create great results.

Loko Yu BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear http://showtime.arts.ac.uk/lokoyu http://my.lcffirstmove.co.uk/graduates/6831 AW/12 : Influenced by non-fashion bodies presented in the form of NANA sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, anti-mainstream style movements and individualist body art, I explored a multiple shade scheme of black that is defined through 3D surface embellishment, giving the illusion of body art growing from the wearer, through the garment, gaining its own life. I've researched sub-cultures and used elements of them in very fine detailing of my pieces, such as functioning piercing into a seam to create a piece. As a designer, I am constantly inspired by people who break free of society’s expectations to fit into a certain mould, body and appearance. I always seek to explore and develop a concept fully without restrictions like trends or pre-set ideas of what the final garments should be or shouldn’t be. This way, the full potential of an idea can be realized; sometimes mistakes made during the development of a garment can lead to unintentional great outcomes. FdA Cordwainers Footwear Design

Bridie is a recent graduate of the FDA Cordwainer's footwear design course. Key inspiration for the collection is drawn from Jacques Tati’s film Play Time. Made in 1967, surrounding the humorous confusion created by the interaction of quick changing technologies. '-Lost in the maze of modern architecture - filled with the latest technical gadgets.’ This concept has been translated through the construction of the shoes; presenting a functional, casual shoe that is structurally engaging and minimal.

My collection started from japanese teenager biker gang in 80's which is called as Bousouzoku. As they were still high school students, they transformed their school uniform in their trendy way. So it got mixed with a few touch of school girl."Favoured by renowned fashion journalist Hilary Alexander was BA (hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear student Anjie JiMin An’s collection. A mixture of dark plaid and navy, she described Anjie’s work as “quite Yohji… very commercial but also very avant-garde and the tailoring was exceptional.” The extremely long fake hair extensions that models wore, which came to almost kilt length, certainly had everyone talking." BA (Hons) Fashion Photography

For my major project, I was inspired by Tarkovsky's film Stalker, which raises questions about humanity. The styling consists of flimsy, delicate pieces which represents our fragility and the series finishes with darker pieces, a metaphor for death. The forest is a deep and transformative place, an unknown and strange limbo: a transgressive landscape between the security of being a student and graduating. My project was photographed using 5x4 polaroid, which gives an ethereal feeling. I prefer to shoot with polaroid and film rather than digital. I'm always looking to work with new designers, makeup artists and stylists. If you're interested in working with me: t: + 44 (0) 7557397416 e: aaronlevisimic@gmail.com

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Copyright © 2013 Victoria Rowley An energetic and open-minded print designer who obsesses over experimental applications and illustrative drawing. With a trademark delicate hand, exotic subjects are florid and evocative. 8=========D My recent work, in a rather farcical and juvenile manner, set out to explore themes of fleshy surfaces and sexuality. The influence of imagery from the photography of Pierre et Gilles, and film such as Henri-Georges Clouzot’s L’Enfer, and that of the German Expressionist genre, led me to respond to the graphic compositions and carnal imagery using harsh contrasts of colour; over-saturated and suffused. Abstract interpretations with screen printing using devore, discharge and procion techniques onto silk velvet and organzas, intended to replicate the real sensuality and lustre of the skin. Using alternative methods in response to my findings, enlarged and distorted images of glitter and wax as an initial layer to the composition, was adopted in keeping to the uncanny as a regular motif. Interacting more exaggerated motifs of pearlescent lemon and lavender colours, with dark harmonious earth shades to make the smooth textures advance, and to radiate in a hypnotic quality. Such frivolity having integrated into print development, seeming to convey a very stylistic aesthetic, I wanted further exploration to circulate around a discussion on taste. It was all the more enticing to use figurative, hand-rendered applications to fully utilize the provoking combinations of imagery I was sourcing. As a reaction against notions of good taste, bad taste is fully explored through archetypical motifs of the grotesque and the beautiful, with the writings of Umberto Eco being of key influence. The outraged Eco’s humorously dry take on objects of American ‘Hyper-real’, (almost perfectly fake ornamental replicas of icons in European arts/culture), inspired me to juxtapose the crude imagery with more traditional academic art. Florid pencil drawings of botanics and genitalia with leafy foliage have evolved into monstrous print placements. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear

This project is a redefinition of the gentleman in the 21st century, to include aspects of masculinity that have been excluded in the conventional definition, such as gay subculture, and the wild, playful desires of the boy child. Inspired by the post-colonial expression of the tweed suite in traditional South African isiXhosa initiation ceremony, I explore the possibilities to overcome the tensions between tradition and contemporary expression that are experienced by young men everywhere. Having direct historical reference to the British Tweed aesthetic, as well as the traditional cultural elements of African aesthetic, I attempt to reflect these tensions, and possibilities for transformation in my collection that plays with colour, texture, proportion, and the artisanal deconstruction and rendition of the tweed tailored suite. All the tweed suiting I designed and wove as part of the project and created them in collaboration with an artisanal tweed mill in London, called London Cloth. The research for this project used a variety of different methods that include, but not limited to, site visits to South Africa, interviews, and reference materials from historical archives and libraries in South Africa and the UK. http://timothywangmenswear.blogspot.co.uk http://timothywangmenswear.tumblr.com contact: timking.wang@gmail.com
