Melanie Bryant Portfolio 2009-2012

Foundation Diploma In Art And Design

Graduating from BA(Hons) Fashion Atelier from UCA Rochester, with a particular interest in pattern cutting and construction, now seeking employment opportunities in London. The main focus of my studies has been pattern cutting and construction techniques. The atelier techniques I have acquired relate mostly to tailoring, fabric manipulation, bias cutting and inner corsetry. I am most accustomed to draped pattern cutting, with adjustments done using measurements on a flat draft. Experience in industry has allowed me to develop skills in flat pattern cutting with the use of blocks and Gerber. My training also extends to working within a design brief, creating technical drawings, knowledge of fabrics and finishings, the use of domestic and industrial machines in addition to hand sewn finishes, embroidery and beading. I am literate in the use of Gerber Accumark and digitising, Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office and am also proficient in French.

Roberto Cavalli aw 2013

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

London-based fashion designer and illustrator Final BA Collection: My vision for my A/W ’12-13 ‘Exotic dislocation’ collection is inspired by my multilayered cultural background, art and contemporary influences, merging into individual and cross-culturally designed clothing. References of Asia, the Exotic and oriental as well as Soviet Constructivism conjure up my fascination with opulence and bohemian cultures. Everything exotic and foreign gives a platform for imagination and exploration, and today we are particularly enriched by the world’s cultural exchange through migration and globalization. In this collection I’ve combined travel, escapism and an array of eastern influences with my personal aesthetic and designer codes. My aim was to balance modern, grown-up edginess with feminine silhouettes to represent long-lasting wardrobe essentials. The collection projects luxury ready to wear with a range of fabrics such as French silk chiffons, Mongolian sheep fur, waxed cotton, cashmere wool and reptile brocade, enhanced with dip-dyed tassel trimmings and chains. Colors run from spicy oranges to aquatic turquoises, balanced with dark plum and light creams. My muse is a traveler, a bohemian ‘gypset’, a woman who examines herself cross-culturally. I'm very much a 2D to 3D designer and portraying this woman in my 2D work is an essential part of my design process. My explorations are strongly illustrative and realistic with a fusion of techniques: pencil drawing, collage and acrylic paint. It’s about juxtaposition, combinations of stylistic references, eras and blending ideas. My work reflects a perception of beauty which comes from opposition and disparities. My designer philosophy is one of contrasts and eclectic mixes, with a modern youthful take on upscale dressing. It combines tradition with layers of modernity – as a young designer I feel it is important to look at the future and forecast it on a personal level rather than only repeating the past or conforming to the present. I aim to create a hybrid-aesthetic that appeals to a multitude of women from different cultural backgrounds, who wear culture as a coat. ‘When you put on the clothes of another culture, it changes how you stand, how you feel, the gestures you make.” (Pinar Yolacan in McDonnel, 2007). My present collection is called 'Sexual Liberation' with the main concept of liberating women from society's sexual constraints and embracing their own bodies for what they are. My main themes include the Slutwalk protests of 2012, The infamous groupies of the 70's and the Item girls of the Indian film industry. Combined together, was born my collection.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Louise Grtzcuk is a 2010 graduate of London College of Fashion gaining a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design Technology Surface Textiles. Louise’s final collection was inspired by lucid dreaming and work of surreal artists such as Jacek Yerka and Karen Preston. Wanting to create a collection of garments that capture the world of dreams seen by a conscious person, Louise uses boning to manipulate fabric and construct details that create mutually exclusive firm and fluid structures of garments. Rich colour palette has been influenced by interior of a dream-like cathedral from Paris. During her studies Louise gained valuable experience at Mirjam Rouden Print Studio specializing in hand painted textiles. As well as print, she is interested in embellishment and embroidery in womenswear. Louise is currently advancing methods learnt during her studies. She aims to gain more experience working with designers of similar interests within the fashion industry and would like to work for a womenswear brand or a luxury house.

My final major project (FMP), 'The Isolation of International Students' was to discover and describe how international students experience and adapt to their new academic, social, cultural and linguistic environment. Being loneliness, mismatch of culture and frustration with the lack of deep integration with Londoners produce high levels of frustration, stress and depression. Ten different stages describe their difficulties and troubles during their studies. It is based on W-Curve and the international student survey. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Shireeka Devlin is an Irish womenswear and textiles designer based in London. She has recently graduated in BA (Hons) Degree in Surface Textiles for Fashion at London College of Fashion. She likes to create extremely wild and fun pieces that are wearable yet showstopping. She loves to use as much colour and print in her work as possible. Her silhouettes are inspired by menswear contrasted with really playful, feminine loud colours and insane prints inspired by everything in her daily life even if it’s something simple such as a poster of a monkey. Her work is all about the print and she believes in lots hand rendering and primary research mixed with CAD to make her artwork and patterns more personal and interesting. Her latest collection ‘Trippin' Over My Dreams’, explores and translates the view ‘Things are not always what they seem’, in a light – hearted and playful way. The collection is based on optical illusion art. Influenced by a variety of optical illusion techniques and subtle 80’s fashion, the collection is fun yet sophisticated. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

A Surface Textiles student specialising in embroidery. Autumn/Winter 2014 ASA The Natural Transitions high-end ready to wear collection explores the forces of nature: the paradox of volcanoes discovering their immense beauty, which at the same time can bring out violent monsters. Observing the extreme power that nature can produce, which can stop the whole of Europe, as Eyjafjallajökull did in 2010; it was an example of the forces of nature and our powerlessness against it. Consequently exploring the effects we have on nature therefore experimenting with sustainable and unsustainable materials such as fur and plastics. The concept is experimented through innovative hands on textile methods such as; crochet, Irish machine, dyeing of fabrics, felting and embellishment. Using colour ways derived from the nature, such as earthy tones of browns juxtaposed with the acid colours from the volcanoes and geothermal pools in Iceland. The unpredictable atmosphere that the volcano concept creates has lead to design influences being derived briefly from the Native Americans but heavily from heavy metal rock and rock icons such as Jennifer Herrema. Contrasting their style with the Scandinavian minimalism. BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Development

Sophie Deroy is a French/American student who grew-up in Vienna, Austria. Whilst there she attended the Vienna International School and graduated in June 2007 with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. After a gap year when she worked for an Austrian luxury fashion brand, she decided to move to London to pursue a career in fashion. Sophie attended the London College of Fashion where she completed a foundation course and bachelor's degree in Womenswear fashion design. During her internship year, Sophie gained experience working for some of the industry's most prestigious luxury fashion brands, such as Marc Jacobs & Alexander McQueen. Her final collection takes its inspiration from Austrian national dress, seashells and skin. The designs reflect a feminine sensibility while the use of masculine, sportswear fabrics achieves a modern, structured look. As a dual national, Sophie is interested in pursuing a career in the international luxury fashion industry where she can put her knowledge of languages to good use. She is fluent in English, French, German and has a good understanding of Italian. Her main areas of interest are design, marketing & buying.
